Complex is an understatement in describing the ceramic sculptures of Krista Nogueras, which often mould, coil, scratch, and gouge interwoven notions of the immediate personal and higher consciousness into microcosmic forms.

We have endured many challenges in our lifetime, but torment slowly creeps in as it dawns upon us that these are not unprecedented times at all. Thus, being drawn to the great discomforts of change and growth, I have been working on the concept of personal sanctuary as a conduit to confront, converse, contemplate and face down our inner demons.

Humanity’s promiscuous treatment of nature and the rapid disruption of the ecological balance is what led us to this confined reality. Its direct impact alters humanity and forces our psyche to shift perspectives. Ironically, being forced to isolation came with the opportunity to transform our personal space into a chrysalis of evolution, allowing us to wrestle with our fears, make peace with ourselves, reassess our purpose and embrace this great change.

Our situation persistently reminds us of the fragility of life and amplifies our core values, both the good and the bad. Facing our dark side and embracing it poses an essential step towards wholeness and transformation, marking an integral part of life and paving our path forward. Perhaps it’s only in times of plight that we have the fleeting strength to discern difficult truths. And as we go through these dark times, the pandemic forces us to not only ruminate and deal with our personal demons, but also face those of humankind.
